Worldcoin(WLD)

WLD is the token of World, a project launched in 2023 by Tools for Humanity that runs on an Ethereum layer-2 network. It is known for its attempt at proof of personhood: a device called the Orb verifies a person biometrically and issues a unique digital identity, World ID, without exposing identifying details. In practice the token is distributed to people who complete that verification, and it pays network fees and powers applications in the ecosystem.

The Orb device photographs the iris and converts it into a numeric code intended to verify that a person registered only once. The verification is later proven cryptographically, confirming uniqueness without revealing the identity itself, and the token runs on a layer-2 network above Ethereum.

The project was developed by Tools for Humanity, founded by Sam Altman, Alex Blania and Max Novendstern, and launched in 2023.
